Mt. Wachusett Intro to Telemark Lessons
If you’re coming to Telemark from a cross-country skiing background or with little or no skiing experience at all, then this is the program for you. We’ll start with getting used to the new equipment and quickly move through the basics of edging and edge transitions, snowplowing, sideslipping, and parallel skiing on easy terrain. We’ll move on to apply these skills in learning the telemark turn, focusing on proper body position throughout. As you become more and more comfortable on the skis, we’ll work on linking turns and start tackling more challenging terrain. You’ll leave with a solid grasp of Telemark skiing equipment and technique, and a taste for a new and exciting sport! A great way to embrace winter in the Northeast. $35 per person

Come try out Telemark skiing in this fun two-hour lesson catered specifically to current alpine skiers! We’ll start by doing some alpine skiing on our Telemark skis, practicing sideslipping, edge transitions, and carving round turns without having your heel locked in. We’ll work up to the full-fledged Telemark turn, focusing on body position and making sure to weight the skis as evenly as possible. We’ll be on the lookout for the dreaded “fake-a-mark!” By the end of the clinic you’ll be working on linking Telemark turns and you just might choose to never go back to alpine… Either way, learning Tele will force you to work on your technique and balance, and will actually make you a better alpine skier in the end. $35 per person

    Mt. Wachusett Backcountry Taster
Are you interested in making the transition from the ski mountain to the backcountry? Sign up for this 3-hour course and learn what it takes to get into the backcountry. You will learn how to put on skins and then earn your turns by skinning up the backside of your local mountain. You will quickly learn the value of efficient skinning and route selection. You will also be able to judge how well your layering system works! This course is meant to introduce the equipment and concepts of backcountry travel and is a great starting point. It is not meant as a stand alone course and we recommend signing up for one of our full-day Backcountry Ski Courses to continue learning under the watchful eye of our one of our Ski Guides. If you are serious about playing in backcountry terrain, we also recommend signing up for an AIARE Level 1 Avalanche Course to be better prepared to recognize potential hazards. $35 per person

  • Mt. Wachusett Avalanche Prep
This course is meant to teach the basics of where, when, and why most avalanches happen. We’ll start indoors, where we’ll cover some avalanche basics and learn how we can identify dangerous “red flags.” We’ll also discuss human factors, and how decision making can be affected by goals or expectations. Next we’ll head outside and practice using avalanche safety tools such as the beacon, shovel, and probe. We’ll dig down and identify layering in the snowpack, and discuss how that might affect snow stability. You’ll learn what the essential tools in the backcountry toolkit are, and then conclude by practicing an actual companion rescue. This course is meant to introduce the equipment and concepts of avalanche safety and is a great starting point. It is not meant as a stand alone course and we recommend signing up for a 3-day AIARE Level 1 Avalanche Course If you will be out often in backcountry terrain. This is great preparation for that course! $35 per person
